Bagless Vacuum , 1978

The concept behind the initial Dyson vacuum cleaner originated with a visit in 1978 to a local industrial sawmill. James Dyson felt a jolt of inspiration as he observed the sawmill spin dust from the air using a conical separator. He wondered if he could construct a smaller cyclone that would spin dust out of rugs and carpets, as he illustrated in this early sketch.
