This work was part of 'Drawing on Joyce', our 2018 Bloomsday group exhibition which featured artworks created live on the streets of Dublin. Led by Dublin Sketchers (now part of Urban Sketchers), participants drew on location in the places that appear in James Joyces's Ulysses. Taking inspiration from the novel – the stories, the characters, the rumour and humour – their sketches told the story of our surroundings, the places we live and people we meet. The work by Dublin Sketchers was exhibited at the James Joyce Centre while the show at the Olivier Cornet Gallery included paintings by gallery artist Eoin Mac Lochlainn and work by invited artists Nickie Hayden, Maser, Paula Meehan and Robert Russell.

For the exhibition, the artist Nickie Hayden also invited poets to contribute a haiku which she integrated into one of her artworks: a beautiful haiku wheel. Some of these haiku were also etched into copper plates. The Haiku were inspired by Joyce’s Ulysses and/or on the subject of Bloomsday.
