© Estate of Alfred Cohen 2020

In 1990 the Cohens visited Cyprus. Alfred had always preferred Northern Europe’s more variable light to the brighter sun of the Mediterranean or the Aegean. But the Cypriot landscape in April enchanted him and he painted several glowing compositions, including this one from his daughter-in-law’s flat. As with his paintings of interiors, the placing of the chairs, and the coffee things on the table, have the uncanny effect of evoking the absent inhabitants, and suggesting a relationship between them.
