© Alfred Wolmark estate

Wolmark's splendid and imposing portrait depicts Mrs. Herbert Cohen, who was introduced to the young Isaac Rosenberg, after his chance encounter with painter Lily Delissa Joseph at the National Gallery, and co-funded his first year of tuition at the Slade School of Fine Art. This work was presented to the collection by Mrs Robert Solomon (née Ethel Cohen, 1888–1985), who was Chair of the Collection between 1943 and 1966.
