Nuvolari shoots past the Mercedes to victory, leaving 300,000 spectators and countless high Nazi party officials thunderstruck. Gallant Tazio grins like a cat. The victory ceremony is badly delayed. It seems the only recording on hand is “Deutschlandlied.” But not to worry. Nuvolari carries a treasured recording in his road car for just such occasions. It blares proudly now on the Nürburgring’s PA system—his own personal record of Italy’s “Marcia Reale.”
