Black Art Me , 2020

Acrylic & Oil Pastel on Canvas

This piece was created in reference to Michelangelo's, "Creation of Adam", where I chose to focus in on the two hands yearning to touch. The not-so-distant hands have the capacity to metaphorically represent how many people may be feeling during this 2020 pandemic across the Nation. The piece is entitled "Black Art Me", to visually share how close in connection I am to a genre that does not exist, yet can still be visualized when expressed. A common trend I have noticed is that art, often created by those that identify as Black, is categorized separately, completely excluding us from the art world as a whole – it can be exampled by "street wear" or "urban fashion" versus acknowledging the overall combination as fashion. I want to engage the audience in a discussion about the closeness we may feel we have with "categories" assigned to us.
