Ecuador , 2013

In this scene a young woman is forced to flee when her brother (who is involved with a paramilitary group) threatens to kill her. But it is not the fear of that moment that stays with her, so much as the sense of loss that accompanies her escape. Because she must flee immediately to save her life, she does not even have a chance to say goodbye to her beloved father (depicted in the foreground). She fears she may never see him again and
the guilt she feels about having left him weighs heavily upon her. During her recovery, she needs the space to grieve this profound loss, and forgive herself for having done what she needed to in order to survive. This will allow her to thrive and manage the enormous challenges of creating a new life in displacement.
