Middle Eastern Jew with Yellow Background , 1958
37 x 27 cm (h x w)
Oil on paper

© Eva Frankfurther estate

A head-and-shoulders portrait of an elderly, Middle-eastern Jewish man, seen in three quarter face view with head turned to the right. He wears a black hat, similar to a fez, and white tunic and has prominent payot (side curls). Frankfurther uses a light, yellow-toned, delicate palette throughout, picking out only the eyes, part of the beard and the hat in darker tones. Both this and the painting 'Middle Eastern Jew with Red Background' were made during her trip to Israel in 1958.
