Poussin's painting ‘Dance to the Music of Time' in the Courtauld Gallery is a meditation on the temporary and transient nature of circumstance. Time is seasonal (a character, or dancer, for each season) fortunes rise and fall. Pleasure and Luxury face outwards , Hard Work and Poverty hover in the background. This turning Wheel of Fortune is also represented in the Tarot, in rags to riches stories, how the mighty have fallen.
‘Modern Dance' takes the idea of time, rhythm and movement to show pattern and sequences that establish themselves then gradually alters and disappears.
Fran Burden ( b. 1964 ) works with stitched textiles and drawing. Her work explores how process, repetition and the act of making can be both purposeful and adaptable and is part of an ongoing investigation into the convergence of fine art and craft practice.
She studied at The Slade School of Art in London and currently lives and works in West Yorkshire.
She has exhibited most recently in ‘The Studio at 4am' curated by Anne Ryan at Hastings Contemporary ( 2020), and ‘New Doggerland’ at Thameside Studios, curated by Jane Millar ( 2020 ) and has shown work with Danielle Arnaud and Tintype galleries in London.
