The Denver & Rio Grande Western’s dual gauge—three–foot and standard placed together, using three rails rather than the usual two—paralleled the straight highway between Alamosa and Antonito and provided a unique opportunity to drive along with a moving train for almost twenty–eight miles. Here a narrow–gauge 2–8–2 rolls south with a trainload of pipe bound for oil fields near Farmington, New Mexico.
