This is a lane near my studio. It was taken at the beginning of the lockdown period and my thoughts of a time of war were prevalent. These black and white photographs are of views I have painted many times and the inspiration to photograph them in this way was really inspired by Don McCullin who lent me his medium format press camera from the 60’s and even developed the film for me in his darkroom. He was interested to see how I photographed the landscape I often paint. I wanted to capture the drama of the landscape and somehow express the human anxiety and darkness looming yet portrays the sense of hope and light in the countryside that brings comfort to me. The lanes lead us on through darkness and give a sense of hope.
