This photo was taken on a cycle ride near my house. The red berry in the tangle of branches is the foreground for the massive man-made roadstone quarry behind. Although complicated the form and pattern makes a good composition and has led to some experimental drawings and paintings.

Moons Hill quarry lies directly on the St Michael line current that travels from Cornwall up to East Anglia taking in many important sites like Glastonbury Tor, Avebury and Bury St Edmunds. The hawthorn berry in the photo is significant and relates, for me, to the Grail legends specifically the Glastonbury or Holy Thorn (the Christmas thorn a form of common hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna 'Biflora'). This flowers twice a year and legend has it that it grew from the staff of Joseph of Arimathea which planted in the ground when he came to Glastonbury. Although it has been cut down and burned, later vandalised and finally removed cuttings of the original tree have been propagated and are protected in many churchyards along the line.

The image therefore juxtaposes, spiritual symbolism of the wild with the large scale destruction of the landscape.
