Language and the duality of identity heavily inform Maia Monteagudo's work. Monteagudo explores the intersectional relationship between her role as a woman and her identity as a descendant of Guatemalan immigrants by exploring the way language and the breakdown of language can help or hinder the expression of identity. Monteagudo overtly wrestles with definitions both in text and in the establishment of a personal identity. Where language seems inadequate Monteagudo states "I quickly found my unique perspective transcended English or Spanish" and that turning to formal influences from her Guatemalan roots and Mayan ancestry allow for richer expression.
