My recent work, intensely coloured expressionist abstraction, has developed gradually out of the painterly, gestural, figurative paintings and drawings of my MFA. Each layer of colour is an intuitive and improvisatory response to the last, balancing eye-popping contrasts, with subtle variations of hue and texture. My approach embraces chance and experimentation, using unconventional tools and techniques alongside brushes and palette knives. Titles are arrived at as the work develops but are not intended to limit interpretation. For me, each work represents a kind of conceptual freedom in this strange new pandemic-stricken world where, by necessity, our physical freedom is temporarily curtailed.
