The calling of St. Matthew , 1599-1600
340 x 322 cm (h x w)
2D Oil on Canvas

Caravaggio is the king of chiaroscuro.
(The strong contrast between light and shadow)

Caravaggio was a revolutionary, using lighting to show perspective and 3D without the help of a back- or middle ground. This very dramatic, one-man-show type lighting shows the highlighted parts and complete darkness, there is no in-between.
Quite theatrical.
