Myrtle / Guise 2020
acrylic on unprimed canvas Myrtle 50 x 40 cm Guise 76 x 51 cm (NFS)

Nicky Hodge produces abstract paintings in a process that is direct, spontaneous and improvised. No two paintings are particularly similar and sometimes difference becomes a defining factor with paintings sitting together in contrasting pairs or small groups of varying size. The work draws upon memory and experience with particular reference to the history of abstract painting and the twin poles of modernism and minimalism. Steeped in an allusive and unsystematic approach, the paintings sit somewhere between joyful playfulness and minimalist restraint.

Nicky Hodge lives and works in London. She has exhibited her paintings, drawings and multimedia works widely over the past 25 years. Recent shows include: A Tapered Teardrop, Terrace Gallery (2019), Six Days in December (2019) and New Doggerland (2020), both at Thameside Gallery, Woolwich, and Fuzzy Objects, San Mei Gallery (2020). Her work has been selected for an international group exhibition at La Grange at Cernay-lès-Reims near Paris in September 2020 and she will have a solo show with Canal Projects, London, early in 2021.
