Survivors and Victims of Violence Against Women
Acrylic paint on plaster and wood

For my conceptual mask, I represented Vincent van Gogh based on one’s perception of him today and the inner struggles he faced in life. On the outside of the mask, it portrays one’s perception of Van Gogh today, a talented artist who revolutionized post-impressionism/ impressionism. The outside includes some of his most famous artworks "Starry Night", "Sunflowers", and "Irises". Conversely, the inside of the mask displays Vincent van Gogh’s inner struggles with mental health. Van Gogh struggled with manic depression, psychosis and many other undiagnosed mental illnesses. The inside of the mask displays Vincent van Gogh’s artwork "Wheatfield with Crows", which was the last artwork before Van Gogh’s suicide in 1890. Overall, my conceptual mask aims to shed light on the mental health struggle many people experience today. Where a “fine” outer shell of oneself may hide one’s true inner pain and struggle with mental health.
