"Rider Jumping A Show" , 2021
Digital

"
I chose Jacques-Louis David’s ‘Napoleon Crossing the Alps’ artwork to create my self-portrait because I really love horses. The original depicts the fearless and determined Napoleon, a warrior on horseback, heading into a battle. To make my own rendition, I made it about show jumping and added an audience. I blurred the background which also made it look like portrait mode on all the new iPhones. Lastly, I added a picture of my face that became ‘meme-ified’ near the beginning of the year so it has sentimental value to everyone in our double class. Overall, it became less serious because the painted horse and rider don’t fit in with the photographic background of the crowd. At first, I felt like I was invading the portrait and ruining it as it is so famous, but the more I changed it, the more it felt like my creation.
