Identities

The topic of the demonstration and definition of identity in today's world is thoroughly displayed in my art piece titled “Identities”. I saw this piece as an opportunity to spread awareness of the different types of inequalities regarding an individual’s identity (racism, gender inequality, etc.). The role of the art piece is to shed light on the fact that we are all human beings of different genders, sexualities, races, religions, and cultures. The art piece was inspired by the numerous incidents regarding inequalities in our world today. Some people identify by religion, gender, etc. and the art piece successfully captures that topic. The artwork contains a woman’s face that is made up of various aspects of one’s identity. The drawing aims to display how each human being is made uniquely. I used various elements and principles of design to capture the aimed message of different forms of identity. I utilized several lines to divide the face with the paper cut outs of various identity topics. Next, I used values to create a 3D look to the woman’s face and to add shading and highlights to the eyes and nose area. I also made sure to include proportion and scale to successfully draw the different forms of an individual’s identity on the paper cut-outs on the woman’s face. Overall, the balance that I created within the piece accentuates the woman’s eyes and communicates the human beings behind each identity.
