Artist Statement
‘Labours of Love’ is a series of paintings exploring the physical and emotional journey of pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood. Motivated by my own childbirth experiences, I worked with women across Canada who allowed me to witness this transitional period in their lives.Rather than idealize or romanticize the subject matter, my aim was to portray real personal choices and experiences, while conveying a sense of security, support, and wellbeing in each situation. Combining actual scenarios with imagined elements, these works celebrate the wonder of the pregnant body, the intense act of childbirth, and the deep bond between mother and child.
Note: 50% of the sale proceeds of these works was donated to The White Ribbon Alliance, advocating for safe reproductive and maternal healthcare for women in developing countries.
