The wave of protests in Burma, (also known as the Union of Myanmar) began in August 2007. The massive anti-government protests, against the then existing Military Junta, were brutally repressed and led to the massacre of monks and civilians. It was a persecution of dissidents and Buddhist priests, characterized by sexual violence, forced labor and the military recruitment of the elderly, women, adolescents and children.

DARFUR , 2003

In 2003 a very violent Civil War began in the western region of Sudan known as Darfur. Since then, between 200, 000 and 400, 000 civilians have been killed by the Sudanese government and the Janjaweed militia. An estimated 2.5 million people were displaced and live in refugee camps. Despite years of peace negotiations sponsored by the United Nations and the African Union, no significant agreements have been reached.

BOSNIA , 1995

In 1995 a genocide occurred in the city of Srebrenica. 8, 000 Bosnian Muslims were killed by members of the Serbian army, whose campaign included deportations and rapes as a weapon of war, in addition to mass killings. This confrontation was not more than the culmination of 500 years of conflict between two ethnic-religious groups for the territorial integrity of their peoples.

RUANDA , 1994

In 1994, in less than 100 days, nearly a million Tutsis, mostly elderly men and boys, and thousands of moderate Hutus, were killed with machetes in Rwanda. The aim was to eradicate the Tutsi ethnic group from the country. The genocidal strategy encouraged the rape of more than 400, 000 Tutsi women with the intention of <<increasing>> the Hutu population.

GUATEMALA , 1981-1983

The Guatemalan Civil War occurred between 1960 and 1996, leaving a strong impact on that country and escalating to genocidal violence from 1981 to 1983. More than 200, 000 individuals of the Maya ethnic group were murdered and 1.5 million were displaced by the Guatemalan military as part of counterinsurgency (USHMM, 2009: 4).
