Embroidery & Oil on Oak

These two works are by Anja von Kalinowski and should be shown alongside one another.

Considering the current situation in Ukraine which seems deeply unsettling for our time, I feel that my series Pravda! (..), presents parallels between what is happening now and what happened in 1917, namely the Russian Revolution and later on WWII. My work Beginning displaces and juxtaposes elements of research, anecdotes and forgotten faces in multi-layered compositions of panel paintings and embroidery. I am establishing an intense relationship with material, process and my fascination with Russian history. It is the creation of an irregular narrative.

Anja von Kalinowski is an artist based in the UK.
