War Orphan

scratchboard

Although this orphan is from the Korean War, my Army experiences in Bosnia’s post-civil war period in 1996 were my inspiration. I visited an orphanage in Sarajevo to distribute Easter treats to the children. During my visit, I learned that Serb forces bombed the building during the Siege of Sarajevo in the 1992-95 timeframe. The children were there because all of their families were killed. I think of them very often to this day, wondering what became of them. Most of the kids that were there during my visit were between 3 and 12. This Korean War orphan is seen in ragged clothes with small crumbles of bread in his hands. I used a sandpaper technique here. I folded up a small piece of fine grit paper and used the corner to create the image, wiping and smudging the ink dust as I worked. I used a scalpel to scratch a few minor details.
