This project documents suburban green space to investigate my unplaced relationship between self-isolation and public space during this global pandemic. Many dense suburban communities such as my hometown Brampton, Ontario have closed businesses and schools while residents are encouraged to stay home and self-isolate. But with recent cuts in jobs and schooling, Brampton residents now populate suburban streets more than ever in the daytime. Nighttime is one of the only times suburban streets are empty and has now become the new time when I can safely walk in my neighbourhood.
I was familiar with the trees in these photographs because I would pass by them nearly every day for ten years before the pandemic. But they are now unfamiliar space because self-isolation has limited my ability to leave home. What were once signs of coming home in the daytime have now become desolate shapes in the nighttime. This project is a continual exploration of my new unplaced relationship with my own suburban community at night.
