"Mushrooms have been a prominent focal point in my art for the past three years or so. I find the fungi kingdom to be exquisitely beautiful, and have deep reverence for what they represent in the natural world. Mushrooms are the divine representation of new life and transformation. Fungus feeds off of non living material, and in turn blooms into these magnificent fruiting bodies that we see as mushrooms. They take what has died, and create new life from it. Because of this action, and the fact that they are part of the boundless mycelium web beneath our feet, they are a perfect reminder that nothing, or no one, is ever really gone.
Luna moths, and moths in general, again remind us of the beauty of transformation. Their whole lives are made to continuously transform, with luna moths only appearing as those luminous green beings for roughly a week. This short time reminds us that life is fleeting, and although it can feel like it’s cut short, it’s still the most beautiful experience that we can be grateful for.
As painters, we are constantly playing with the balance of light and dark. Our darks on a canvas can represent the shadow work that must be done in our waking life. Dealing with death, destruction, depression, and any other way that darkness manifests itself, is necessary so that we may return to the light. Mushrooms and moths can remind us time and time again, that even in our dark times, there is light and life to be found on the other side."
