Macquarie Island is a tribute to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and like many of Szmerling's works, addresses the resounding beauty found in the Asia-Pacific region.

Georgia Szmerling's multi-disciplinary practice includes ceramics, painting and drawing, with a dominant thematic interest in portraying the natural world. Rich in texture and highly expressive, her wild plant formations often suggest a sense of lyrical movement. At the same time, the artist's abstract, whimsical ceramic creatures exude a tender, fairytale-like charm.

Szmerling has been a regular studio artist at Arts Project Australia since 2003 and had her first solo exhibition in 2005. She has exhibited in numerous group shows including Spring 1883; Melbourne Art Fair; Tanks Art Centre, Cairns; and Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, Melbourne. Public collections include National Gallery of Victoria, as gifted by Stuart Purves, as well as corporate and private collections throughout Australia.
