Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He is considered one of the foremost artists in the Dutch low lands and has completed over 400 paintings, 1000 drawings and 300 engravings during his career.

This self portrait, captured toward the end of his life, shows Rembrandt's ability to portray realistic self-characterization and reflects the growing interest in the 'self'.
