Mrs. Alpaugh at the Loom , 1945
9 x 7 in (h x w)
Etching with drypoint on wove paper; collection of Ora Hatton Shay

The unidentified subject, known only as “Mrs. Alpaugh,” is shown in a state of deep concentration as she works her loom. Hatton’s table runners, displayed nearby, were made on a loom much like Alpaugh’s. An expression of Hatton’s love and reverence for the handcrafts, this image is, in some respects, a portrait of the hands, eyes, mind, and tools working in concert in the service of creativity.
