Hatton studied calligraphy with Lawrence Christie and Rosemary Ratcliffe at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. She lettered the frontispages of many of her bound books and created larger works of calligraphy, such as the Shakespearean sonnet displayed here. In 1951, Hatton developed a course in "Lettering and Poster Design" at CSU, the opening salvo for coursework in graphic design.
