Alegoría a Violeta Parra , 2017
280 x 125 cm (h x w)

This embroidery takes a series of tree of life embroideries by the Chilean artist Violeta Parra as it's archetype. Parra was a poet, painter, sculptor, performer and musician as well as embroiderer. Her work transformed embroidery from a decorative art into to a political art and it holds an iconic place in Latin American cultural history. This embroidery by Memorarte includes motifs from the Violeta Parra Tree of Life series (the tree, the bird and the supine head) but presents them in a unique piece that is both inspired by, and a tribute to, the work of Violeta Parra. The embroidery was created in 2017 to commemorate the centenary of Violeta Parra's birth.
