Up until the 1940s, Goodfellow Bros. was a “truck and shovel operation” because the jobs around Wenatchee over those years had consisted of heavy-rock work. Two years after completing the construction of the Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery in 1940, the company brought on more and different equipment to expand operations. This included purchasing the D-8 Caterpillar and LeTourneau scrapers, as well as forgotten scraper lines like Woolridge and LaPlant-Choate. But at the time, Jim Sr. described it as “all very modern.” Leavenworth and Dvorshak were the largest fish hatcheries in the world at the time, both built by GBI.
