Drypoint Etching on Paper

Rosenbaum's delicate drypoint etching, 'Boy with Basket', executed in 1904 during his studies at Academie Julien in Paris, is a striking example of his early experimentation with the etching medium. In comparison to traditional etching, with drypoint, the lines are applied directly onto the surface of a copper plate with a stylus, resulting in softer, less defined, more fluid lines. In the case of Rosenbaum’s work, the medium seems to fit the subject matter perfectly, resulting in a lively and joyful countryside scene.
