Writing on painting:
‘A cored apple filled with brown sugar, roasting for her at the hob on a dark autumn evening’ 18/02/19
(Stephen’s Daedalus recalls his mother’s last days )

This painting was part of a series of works the artist created for our 2019 Bloomsday group show. The exhibition, titled 'Olives, Oysters and Oranges', featured watercolour paintings around mentions of food in James Joyce’s novel ‘Ulysses’. The artists included OCG artists Yanny Petters and Eoin Mac Lochlainn and the following invited artists: Michelle Boyle, Áine Divine and John Keating. The exhibitions also featured 'Penelope', filmed by Conor Tobin, performed by Caitríona Ní Threasaigh and Aaron Hughes as Leopold Bloom. As in previous Bloomsday exhibitions, we continued to collaborate with Dublin Sketchers and exhibited a selection of their sketchbooks on the same theme.

The title of the show, 'Olives, Oysters and Oranges', came from Dr Flicka Small's research into the semiotics of food in Ulysses. We were delighted when Dr Flicka Small accepted to be our guest speaker for the opening of the show on the 13th of June 2019. On the 16th of June 2019, our visitors attended a live performance of ‘Penelope’ by the artist Caitríona Ní Threasaigh and enjoyed a great selection of food from our sponsors, the Derry-based award-winning artisan Tamnagh Foods and Dart Mountain Cheese.
