Oswald Külpe (1862-1915)
150 x 100 x 2.5 cm (h x w x d)

Oswald Külpe in his younger years, presumably shortly after his appointment to Würzburg. The photo was taken in Würzburg between 1894 and 1897.
From 1894 to 1909, Külpe was professor of philosophy, including aesthetics, at the University of Würzburg. He declined a call to Palo Alto, California, in 1903, but he accepted a call to the University of Bonn in 1909.

From the end of the 19th century, Külpe encouraged a series of studies on the psychology of thought and repeatedly participated as a test subject in experiments on controlled introspection. He thus opened up a new field of research, the experimental investigation of higher mental processes.
