Flora’s imagery springs out of her sense of the mythical and archetypal elements of landscape, as found in the storytelling tradition. She is fascinated by how the residue of our childhood reading affects our collective emotional connection with observed landscape. The motif of the transformative quest in medieval romance informs her work with a sense of travelling outwards into the wild forest, and inwards into the mysteries of the self. She frames her search within her interaction with the materiality of the print matrix, whether metal plate, wood, or lithographic stone, responding to its nature. She lets the mordant or ink run, drip and burn, making unexpected traces, observing this and following its suggestions, to dream the image into being. Alongside her print practice she works with divination and ritual walking, and enjoys constructing magical events to explore the imagery she is using. As she ventures forth into the pathless forest of printmaking, she is looking for a lost magic: a glimpse through trees of the mystical white hart.
Flora lives in West Wales, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers, and is doing a Fine Art MA at Aberystwyth School of Art.
