Bina Shah’s practice is site-responsive and deep rooted in both urban and rural environments.

Her approach to investigating ‘site’ often takes the form of two or three-dimensional artworks. Her imagery is not grounded in representation but has a sense of contemplative abstract familiarity. She is interested in observing the impact that humans have on the environment and explores the traces they leave behind, and hence the resulting image is often ambiguous, challenging the perception of the viewer to find their own definition and narrative.

Her works is often a result of experimenting with different materials and techniques, which leads to unexpected discoveries. Her recent series of prints have been titled using Irish words as each one has layers of wisdom encoded in that it allows us to delve deeper into the psyche and landscape of this island; ‘Ailce’ (large immovable stone) and ‘Tra’ (beach).

She uses a combination of practises; from painting, stitching and various printmaking methods often to echo her emotional response to the ‘site,

Bina graduated as an Illustrator from Harrow School in 1982, and since 2016 her focus has been as an abstract artist.

She has exhibited widely since 2018 and was awarded the Woolwich Contemporary Print Prize for the 2019 at the annual National Original Print Exhibition 2019 and shortlisted for the Boodle Hatfield Print Prize 2020.
