The Garden of Me - a visual metaphor of who I am and how I came to be. , 2021
52 x 52 x 1 in (h x w x d)
Installation: Turf, photographs, mirror, Video

Approaching the installation, the viewer must seat themselves in order to see what they are about to experience. The viewer must then physically place themselves in my shoes in order to understand and be able to see the roots of my life and my family tree, only through my point of view one will understand the complexity of myself. Once the viewer is in my shoes, they will see how I perceive my family tree, with a collage of family photos with Norwegian and English literature behind it. The branches of family members trickle down to me, where a mirrored object is placed with “Who are you?” written on it, as I am always questioning my values and family history. This mirror is placed directly in front of the viewer, almost as if my personal representation in this installation is questioning why the viewer is here.

After being able to perceive my family tree, the viewer will see the roots of myself, my childhood and memories that have shaped who I am today. Two screens are placed on either side of the roots covered in soil and moss to visualize nourishment while playing clips of what makes me happy. Looking upward, my future is abstracted and bright, as I’m hopeful to see what is in store for me. The garden theme is a reflection of my values and upbringing; nature being a large part in my life while restoring my connection to it to better understand myself and ecosystems around me.
