Mexican Necklace , 1990s
Jewelry

This Mexican necklace made of diamond-shaped purple crystals belongs to Joyce Wang. When I asked Joyce what she would wear to a fancy museum event, she brought up this piece because it is glamorous and could make her stand out. Among the new generation of Chinese Canadians, self-fashioning practices are no longer about “conformity” but about “individuality”. These women do not desire to fit in and adapt to mainstream Western society but to bring their unique taste, aesthetics, and lived experiences into the new cultural environment. In the context of globalization, women like Joyce, who lives in the contemporary diaspora, collect fashionable clothing and accessories from all over the world to communicate their desire to be seen as multicultural beings – open-minded, global citizens.
