This project takes inspiration from the embroidery work, (imagined architectures) of Antonia Jabloner, an artist in the art extraordinary collection. Not much is known about this artist other than she was diagnosed with schizophrenia after being found wandering the roads of northern Scotland alone, in a distressed state. She then spent the rest of her life in a psychiatric hospital in Aberdeen.
I feel it is a very unique and interesting embroidery, which combines both Jabloner’s artistic and architectural practice. I felt compelled when looking at the embroidery work, to try and understand the underlying rules that led to its creation. As well as rules, when I look at the work of Jabloner, I also see a landscape made up of islands and rivers.
The rules I have used are referred to as random walkers, I have used nine of them. I started the random walker program in the centre of the image and let it step randomly in eight geometric directions for a one minute period. This leads to mark making and the more a step is repeated the darker it becomes.
I feel visually like with Jabloner's work that mine also resembles a landscape. I see the work as being a metaphor for the wandering this artist was doing around northern Scotland before being admitted to hospital.
