Charles West ‘patron saint of Bristol Asylum’. , 2021
59.4 x 42 cm (h x w)
Crayon and penknife, on paper.

“I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. . . . But . . . you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live”

(Exodus 33:19–20).

‘To protect Moses, God put him “in a cleft in the rock” and covered him with His hand as He passed by.’ (Verse 22) ‘

“Then,” God promised, “I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen”.’ (Verse 23)

The photograph of Charles West who is described as having religious mania, caught my attention because he looks so beautiful, childlike, innocent, and pure.

I have been fascinated over the ten weeks of the course, exploring the collection at Glenside Hospital Museum, by what he might be looking at.
