Arpillera 3 , 2008
59 x 75 cm (h x w)
Newspaper, used fabric and thread

New Hall Art Collection
Francisca Aninat created Arpillera 3 from bits of used fabric and newspaper gathered at a market in Santiago, Chile. She shredded the fragments and then roughly sewed them together. The work’s title references the traditional Chilean art form of the arpillera. Aninat subverts expectations of what an arpillera should look like. Instead of a brightly coloured patchwork of images, Aninat’s work is abstract, with a muted palette. By recycling waste materials, the artist draws attention to the social history of textiles and the process of creating art.
