For Shackled Women and Girls Searching for Rainbows and Dreaming of Freedom , 2022

The imprisonment of women can cause devastating generational consequences for families, particularly in circumstances where women are the sole providers for their children. In 2020, the United Nations reported that more than 700,000 women are in prison around the world. In the U.S., roughly 15% of incarcerated youth are girls, and more than half of youth incarcerated for running away are girls. The title of this painting is a nod to Ntozake Shange's series of poems, "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf."
