On November 14, 1960, six-year old Ruby Bridges became the first African-
American student to integrate an elementary school in the South. William
Frantz Elementary School was only blocks from her home. However, due to
pervasive racism, Ruby and her mother had to be escorted by federal
marshals to the school. When they arrived, two marshals walked in front of
Ruby, and two behind her. Only one educator, Barbara Henry, agreed to
teach her, and Ruby was the only student in Henry’s class because the other
children had been removed from by their parents.
