Growing up in Haliburton I would ride the school bus past this place most days. Now I wonder if it will be destroyed in my lifetime. Along highway 21 west of town, one swamp drained to make Pinestone, another, the Grass Lake Wetlands, currently in danger of being further filled and then built on to create more “desirable” real estate. “Desirable” depends on your point of view. And your species.
Dysart’s proposed Shoreline Preservation Bylaw, if passed, would finally classify wetlands as “bodies of water” and require their protection as such. We name our towns, our lakes and rivers and roads, but rarely our swamps, showing how little they have been valued. I have never heard anyone refer to the swamp in this painting by name but given it’s proximity to the old farm and homestead of the Moon family, I take the liberty of naming it “Moon Swamp”.
