A profound message is connotated in the use of composition and selection of subject matter. The depiction of the withered lotus seed-pod in burnt black in the bottom left corner and the dried-up lotus leaves in the top right corner form a stark contrast with the sprouting lotus, fresh and green, at the centre of the picture. As such, the artwork illustrates the life and death of lotus on the same plane.
The life cycle of lotus sheds light on the nature of human life. Through lamenting the withering of the lotus, the artist engages viewers in contemplating the transience of life.
