Department of Pharmacological Sciences

Description:
The growing axon tips of cortical neurons over-expressing a transcription factor called YB-1. Elevated levels of YB-1 can contribute to these growing tips collapsing and forming aberrant dystrophic bulbs. Here at the tips, you see the axonal fibers are unwinding and forming these bulbous structures at their ends, which are dystrophic bulbs.

Bio:
Mustafa Siddiq is a neurobiologist who primarily works on axonal regeneration of injured spinal axons. His work focuses on RNA-expression in the axons after injury, to find RNA targets that could be contributing to inhibiting axons from regenerating. His lab works on finding drugs for these targets to promote axons to regenerate after spinal cord injury.

Research Focus: Spinal Cord Injury, finding drugs and drug targets to overcome paralysis
