This series of digital and oil on canvas artworks, inspired by van Gogh’s ‘Skeleton with burning Ciggarete’, depicts a very mystic, memento mori themed, and grotesque room, with the candle being the only source of light. The artistic emphasis on creating an interesting shadow play indicating the depth of the skull with the mystic aspect of the candle being blown out creates the feeling that the skull or something else in the room is alive. The main aspect is the darkness which more and more fills the room and deprives the artwork of its life. The oil on canvas piece is an extension of this idea into a different medium.
