When Dave, a native Norfolk Islander, showed me the rugged north coast of the island from his boat, I was impressed by the spectacular natural rock formations. Here you can see the fascinating colours and textures in the rocks. When I asked Dave what this rock pinnacle was called, he said it had no local name. As I saw the image come up on my computer screen later, I realised it looked like a bear wearing a feather cape. In Polynesian and other tribal groups, feather capes are a symbol of status or authority. So I asked some of the locals if I could name this photo after Chief Running Bear, the famous American Sioux Indian. They agreed it would be appropriate as he was a mighty warrior, and he would certainly have had a fine feather coat.
