STORY:
Anniversary Day, also known as Bounty Day, is dear to the hearts of Norfolk Islanders. Each year on June 8th they celebrate the anniversary of their ancestors’ arrival from Pitcairn Island in 1856. Prior to that, Norfolk Island had been a penal colony. But when the Pitcairn Islanders arrived, they were given land grants by Queen Victoria and left to take care of the island. While some Bounty Day traditions have changed over the years, the clothes, food and sense of belonging never change. The re-enactment of the long boat landing by their ancestors goes ahead no matter how big the seas. Come rain, hail or shine, locals gather on Kingston pier dressed in traditional outfits, with locally made 'Bounty Hats'. This is a wonderful step back in time and this photo is in honour of all Norfolk Islanders.
