This piece is a representation of the stepmother character from the Grimm fairytale, The Juniper Tree.” It is also one
of three different birds described among the seven variations of “The Juniper Tree” stories from different regions in
Europe sourced during the 17th-19th centuries. The use of a black raven in these stories emphasizes the threat of
death, lack of control, and evil actions that take place, in contrast to the two other birds, a raven and a white dove.
